June is a great month to explore beyond Naples
Everything you need to know about Naples in June
Naples in June is the start of the high season thanks to the combination of hot but not scorching weather and the perception that it will be quieter than July and August.
While it’s true that the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and Capri are a little quieter than later in the summer, the city of Naples is at its busiest this month so you will need to plan ahead to ensure you don’t miss out on everything it has to offer.
The countryside around Naples is truly beautiful at this time of year
I prefer spending time in the wider Campania area in June, and try to get out on the water as much as possible – especially as the month progresses and it gets a lot hotter!
Here’s what you need to know about visiting Naples at this time of year:
Naples weather in June
June in Naples is hot, not the intense heat we get at the height of summer, but definitely hot.
The average temperatures during the day are around 80-84°F/27-29°C, with evening temperatures ranging from 62-66°F/17-19°C. With very little rainfall and extra long days before the summer solstice in July, the weather in Naples this month is extremely consistent! Keep an eye on the humidity levels as when these are high in the city, it will feel hotter when out and about.
All that sunshine means you’ll have perfect beach conditions if you want to relax by the sea. The temperatures on the coast in places like Sorrento and Capri are slightly lower than in Naples itself but the weather will still be great.
June can be very hot in Naples, and as such one of the best ways to escape the heat is to head to a site like the Catacombs of San Gennaro
What to pack for Naples Italy in June
Thanks to the lovely hot weather in Naples this month, your packing will be straightforward because you’ll just need to bring light summer clothing, made with breathable fabrics like cotton and linen that keeps you cool.
Linen pants or dresses, loose tops and good quality sandals will serve you well. If you want to wear shorts or tank tops this is fine, no one will look twice at you, but remember to have at least one outfit that covers your knees and shoulders if you are planning to visit the Duomo or other churches to be respectful.
I would recommend wearing clothes with slightly more coverage however, just because the sun is so intense here. Every year I see lots of people walking around wearing dresses with spaghetti straps or tank tops whose shoulders are bright red with sunburn, simply because they’ve been outside all day and maybe didn’t expect the sun to be so powerful. Wearing a dress with cap sleeves or a t-shirt will help prevent this.
If you’re planning a beach trip then remember walking around in swimwear away from the beach is not okay here, so bring clothes to wear on top when you are in a town, on the train or in a taxi on your way to or from the beach.

General Naples packing tips
There are certain things you’ll want to include in your packing whatever time of year you visit Naples, and I recommend that you keep these travel essentials with you in your carry on bags to avoid any problems, including:
You should also make sure to have copies of your passport (either paper photocopies or digital copies on your cell phone), the details of your travel including hotels and transfers and any medications that you need to take regularly.
Sunscreen is essential this time of year, even if you’re not planning on going to the beach as sights like Pompeii are very exposed. Italian pharmacies and supermarkets sell a variety of sunscreen brands and types so you do not have to bring this with you, but I find it’s good to have at least enough for the first couple days of a trip so I don’t have to worry about getting sunscreen immediately!

What to wear during a June visit to Naples
There are two rules that apply year-round when deciding what to wear in Naples, but really, they apply anywhere in Italy!
Rule 1 – Be comfortable
All that sunshine means it’s a great time to wear flip flops right? Wrong, and I am speaking from experience here!
Flip flops are the worst footwear to wear in Naples or on the coast. They cannot stand up to the cobblestones, the heat, the marble flooring in museums, the uneven steps up and down the streets of Positano and Amalfi or the ancient roads of Pompeii and Herculaneum. As someone who once walked around Pompeii in flip flops, they will not last and are terrible for your feet.
Having comfortable footwear will make or break a trip in my experience, so leave the flip flops for lazy days by the pool and instead wear walking sandals or good quality cotton tennis shoes when out and about – your feet will thank you!
Rule 2 – Dress in layers
You may think this is silly to say when it’s hot, but light layers in June make sense. As I talked about above, you’ll need to be more covered up when visiting churches so having a light cardigan or scarf to cover your shoulders is a simple way to make the rules work.
If you’re planning to climb Mount Vesuvius it will be a lot cooler at the crater so a light jacket will be helpful, and the same applies for Naples’ underground sites which can be damp and much cooler than street level.

Is June a good time to visit Naples Italy?
While there is no real bad time to visit Naples, I would recommend prioritising other parts of Campania over Naples itself in June.
Sorrento is absolutely stunning in June and while busy, the Amalfi Coast and Capri are not as packed as they are later in the summer. The lesser-known attractions at Caserta, Capua and Phlegraean Fields are quieter as well – this is the ideal time to see the gardens of the Caserta Royal Palace with its stunning greenery.
If you stay in Naples, follow my summer schedule and get up early to do something first thing in the morning before heading back to your hotel or apartment when the crowds and heat start building. Then, go back out later in the afternoon when most people are finishing their day. A lot of sights extend their opening hours in line with sunset so you have more time available!
Consider visiting the ancient Roman villas near Castellamare di Stabia where you can escape the heat and the crowds at the same time

How crowded is Naples in June?
June is one of those months when everyone wants to come to Naples, with a lot of people out of school, and it’s the high travel season all around Europe. As you can combine your visit with time on the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento, having Naples as your home base is even more attractive in June.
Naples is therefore extremely busy, so prices for accommodation and flights will be higher and the city is full of visitors. You will need to plan your sightseeing carefully and book well in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on what you want to see!
My recommendation would be to make Sorrento your base for a June trip. It’s the perfect time to be in Sorrento, but you can easily get to Naples and other places in Campania for the day and then when you’re done in the city, you can jump on the train or ferry and get back to the relative peace.

What food to eat in June in Naples
All the delicious summer fruits and vegetables start to make an appearance in June, with the warm weather leading to tomatoes, zucchini, basil, eggplant, raspberries and apricots all bursting with flavor.
While you’ll see it on menus all over Italy year-round, hold off on Caprese salad until June as the tomatoes won’t be good enough before then, but then eat as much as you can in these summer months! Originating on the island of Capri, the simplicity of the ingredients in the salad means the quality of the tomato, basil and buffalo mozzarella needs to be exceptional for it to taste right.
Opt for lunches that offer a lot of options to sample all of the seasonal produce available

June holidays and special dates in Naples
There is only one major holiday in June, but it’s a big one!
June 2 – Festa della Repubblica
The Festa della Repubblica celebrates the day the monarchy was abolished, and Italy became a republic, on June 2, 1946, so every year on that day we remember the anniversary of this important date in recent Italian history.
There is a ceremony in Piazza Plebiscito and parades through the main streets so be aware that you may have to take a diversion to get where you want to go.
Many shops and businesses will be closed, and it’s best to check in advance for opening hours for particular museums or restaurants you are planning to visit. If the weather is good, many locals head to the beach so be prepared for a busy day if you also want to do this!

Free Things to do during June in Naples
On the first Sunday of each month, a number of museums, art galleries and archeological sites are open for free to all visitors all over Italy.
In the city of Naples you can get free entry to many places, including these locations:
- MANN – National Archeological Museum of Naples
- Royal Palace of Naples
- Capodimonte Museum
- Castel Sant’Elmo
- The Museum and Charterhouse of San Martino
In Campania, you can visit some locations for free as well, including:
- Pompeii
- Herculaneum
- The archeological park and museum at Paestum
- The ancient Roman villas at Oplontis and Stabiae
- The sites within the Phlegrean Fields area
Another option at this of year is of course to head to the beach!
Booking in advance for the Free Sunday is not generally possible so aim to arrive early and expect large lines at the most popular sights – particularly Pompeii.
If you have another day when you could visit Pompeii, I would recommend avoiding the Free Sunday event and visiting one of the other free sites, saving your Pompeii sightseeing for a different day when it will be easier to get in.
Of course, there are lots of other things you can do for free at any time. You could stroll along the path than runs along the shore and walk around the Castel dell’Ovo or go to the large park on the Capodimonte hill and relax under the shady trees, there’s no end of possibilities!
