Everything you need to know about Naples in April

April is the start of the busy season in Naples, with many travelers coming here to enjoy the spring weather, mild temperatures and of course the Easter celebrations. This doesn’t mean that it is a bad time to visit Naples however, with the crowds tending to concentrate at a few places making them easy to avoid if you know what to do.

I always enjoy visiting Naples and Campania in April because I can still get into all my favorite sightseeing spots but it’s also warm enough to relax with an aperitivo outside on Piazza Dante or Piazza Bellini and start dreaming about being able to go to the beach!

Here’s what you need to know about visiting Naples at this time of year:

Naples weather in April

The weather in Naples in April is excellent, you can expect to have a lot of sun but the temperatures aren’t too hot and there’s a lower chance of rainfall. Some people even head to the beach on particularly warm days!

It’s still a little too mild for me to relax on the beach, but it’s lovely to have warmer evenings again, I always start to miss sitting outside by the time we get to January so I can’t wait by the time April comes around.

The average temperature during the day in April is around 65-68°F/18-20°C, but by the end of the month we often get days where the sun actually feels hot so you don’t want to forget your sunscreen. The average temperature at night averages out at 54°F/12°C so you’ll definitely still need a light jacket to sit outside but the winter chill has definitely left the air.

Blue skies abound in mid-to-late April so be sure to use sunscreen

There is a small chance of rainfall, especially at the start of the month, but you’re unlikely to see many rainy days.

On the Amalfi coast and the islands like Capri, the weather is very similar and the businesses here tend to reopen this month as a result, so this is a great time of year to explore the coastal areas of Campania before the temperatures get hot.

What to pack for Naples Italy in April

Similar to March, layers will be essential when packing for April in Naples. Yes, the sun can feel very warm at times, but the evenings are cooler and on days when it is more cloudy or there have been a few rain showers it will feel more mild.

Light cotton pants paired with a t-shirt or light jumper works well, as do hiking pants and a long-sleeve top or a lighter dress over leggings. I’d always have a heavier sweater or cardigan with me as it will feel cooler if you visit underground sites or churches as well as in the evenings, and either a waterproof jacket or small travel umbrella as well in case of sudden rainfall.

If you do want to head to the beach during your trip don’t forget to bring swim wear, but be prepared for the sea temperatures to be on the cold side!

General Naples packing tips

There are certain things you’ll want to include in your packing whatever time of year you visit Naples, and I recommend that you keep these travel essentials with you in your carry on bags to avoid any problems, including:

You should also make sure to have copies of your passport (either paper photocopies or digital copies on your cell phone), the details of your travel including hotels and transfers and any medications that you need to take regularly.

What to wear to visit Naples in April

There are two rules that apply year-round when deciding what to wear in Naples, but really, they apply anywhere in Italy!

Rule 1 – Be comfortable

This is primarily focused on your footwear, but also applies to your overall packing. There’s nothing more miserable than being too hot or too cold because you brought the wrong clothing with you!

Your shoes are particularly important because you’ll be doing a lot of walking, and wearing poor quality, uncomfortable shoes make your life a lot harder. Having made many poor choices in the past with my travel shoes, I will talk to everyone and anyone about choosing comfort over fashion, it really does make a difference to how you feel at the end of the day back at your accommodation.

Go for either good quality walking shoes/sneakers or walking sandals to wear when you explore all the attractions Naples has to offer, and you’ll be sure to have a great time!

Rule 2 – Dress in layers

As I mentioned further up, packing different clothes that you can layer makes a lot of sense in April. The weather in Naples is getting better but isn’t consistent yet, so having a mix of lighter and heavier items in your travel wardrobe is ideal.

How crowded is Naples in April?

The time around Easter is always busy, no matter when the date falls, so Pompeii will be busy as well as the trains and streets of the historic center.

People who have the option to travel outside of the school calendar tend to choose spring and fall to visit Naples and Campania because of the milder weather, so the city is always busier, but you shouldn’t let this put you off. You just need to plan ahead, and book certain things in advance when you can, particularly Pompeii, the Veiled Christ in the San Severo chapel and catacombs of San Gennaro.

Visitor numbers for Sorrento and the Amalfi coast also start to build in April but they’re nowhere near their August peak so this is a great time to head south and visit these parts of Campania.

What food to eat in April in Naples

Seasonal produce in April includes fava beans (broad beans), artichokes, asparagus and the super sweet strawberries that mature early in southern Italy. Neapolitan roasted artichokes are different to the crispy fried version we eat in Rome, so definitely give those a try if you have the opportunity!

If you’re visiting Naples around Easter you will be able to try some of the traditional local foods that mark these celebrations, including:

  • Impepata di Cozze, a spicy mussel soup (sometimes with octopus added also) which is served in the evening of Holy Thursday.
  • Casatiello, a large bread-based savory pie filled with all sorts of cheeses, salami and other meats and whole hard boiled eggs arranged on top.
  • Fellata, the name given to an appetizer plate served on Easter Sunday with slices of cured meats, cheeses, eggs and fava beans
  • Pastiera, a sweet tart that has been enjoyed here for hundreds of years! You can now get this year-round but it’s particularly popular at Easter.

What to do during April 2025 in Naples Italy

April holidays and special dates in Naples

There are a few key dates to be aware of in April:

Easter

In 2025 the specific Easter dates are:

  • Holy Thursday – April 17
  • Good Friday – April 18
  • Easter Sunday – April 20
  • Easter Monday – April 21

As well as attending the Easter masses, there are different processions in Naples and the wider Campania region at different points which you can watch or join.

Easter Sunday is a huge holiday for the Italians so you will see that most sights, shops and many restaurants will be closed, although you won’t struggle to find somewhere to eat! Easter Monday, known as Pasquetta in Italian (‘little Easter’) is another public holiday and many people take advantage of the day off and good weather to head outside and enjoy a picnic.

April 25 – Liberation Day

Liberation Day, Festa della Liberazione, is an important national holiday in Italy because it celebrates the end of Nazi occupation during World War II and the end of Fascist rule in Italy (Benito Mussolini was shot 3 days later).

As it’s a national holiday, schools, banks and shops are closed but no tourist sites are closed and it shouldn’t impact your stay much.

Free Things to do during February in April

On the first Sunday of each month, a number of museums, art galleries and archeological sites are open for free to all visitors all over Italy.

In the city of Naples you can get free entry to many places, including these locations:

In Campania, you can visit some locations for free as well, including:

Booking in advance for the Free Sunday is not generally possible so aim to arrive early and expect large lines at the most popular sights – particularly Pompeii.

April is a great time of year to adventure into Campania – consider visiting Paestum (pictured above) out in the countryside for a relaxed day trip

If you have another day when you could visit Pompeii, I would recommend avoiding the Free Sunday event and visiting one of the other free sites, saving your Pompeii sightseeing for a different day when it will be easier to get in.

Of course, there are lots of other things you can do for free at any time. Visit the cathedral of Naples, wander the ancient streets of Naples or take a walk on the Lungomare that stretches out along the coast – these are just some of the possibilities!
