Knowing what the weather in Naples will be like when you visit is very important. It’s hard to know what to pack and what activities you can do without this information!

Everything you need to know about the weather in Naples and Campania

Luckily the climate of Naples and Campania means there’s no bad time to visit. We get mild winters and hot summers, with relatively low rainfall, so there’s no point in the year I would tell you to avoid.

However, if you want a relaxing vacation that’s mainly about exploring the coves of the Amalfi Coast, the weather isn’t going to be right in February. Similarly, if you want to spend all day outside in Pompeii and climbing Mount Vesuvius, the intense heat in July makes this far more challenging!

To help you decide on the right time for you to visit Naples, on this page we’ll be talking about:

Spring in Naples

The spring season in Campania starts off much cooler than you might expect, but fast gets much warmer. This is an ideal time of year to come to Naples if you want to do plenty of sightseeing but also want to relax in the sunshine at times.

High and low average temperatures

In March the average temperature during the day is 57°F/14°C but by the end of the month this rises to 63°F/17°C. Those temperatures continue to build through April with averages around 65-68°F/18-20°C in the daytime. Without winds and cloudy skies sunny days at the end of April can feel really warm so I start thinking about putting away my heavier clothing!

By the time we get to May, the daily high temperatures climb even further, going from 70°F/21°C at the start of the month to an average of 76°F/25°C as we approach June. With humidity levels also rising, there are even days in May which are warm enough for people to go to the beach.

You can expect more nice days than not in the spring

At night the temperatures stay cool until May, especially if the days have been partly cloudy and the sun hasn’t had a chance to warm up the air. The average low temperatures in May sit around 58-60°F/14-16°C so you’ll still want to pack a couple of light jackets or sweaters, but it’s definitely comfortable enough to sit outside in the evening.

How much does it rain in spring?

The greatest chance of spring rain showers comes in March, but even then the chances aren’t too high. As we get closer to June the likelihood of rain drops significantly. I keep a small umbrella in my bag just in case through March and April, but take it out in May as then it’s just extra weight!

Summer in Naples

Summer in Naples is hot, sometimes extremely hot. The hottest month is July but both June and August feel very warm as well, and you need to be careful when planning outdoor sightseeing activities. This is the best time of year to visit Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast if you want to make the most of the coastal areas of Campania.

High and low average temperatures

At the start of the season in June, the average temperatures during the day are around 80-84°F/27-29°C. The humidity isn’t too bad this month, but by July it is intense. The average temperature in July is 86°F/30°C but on some days it is much higher than this. You definitely want to spend as much time near the water in July as the sea winds help to cool things down significantly!

In August the average day time high is 84°F/29°C but as the month progresses this starts to drop. The last week of the month is our favorite summer vacation time here as the weather is just perfect!

Evening lows stay consistent through the summer at around 66-70°F/19-21°C so you’ll always be comfortable eating and drinking outside.

Beaches and swimming in the sea

Any coastal location in Campania is a little cooler than the city of Naples, and you will be sure to find a spot to relax and swim in the sea. Average sea temperatures are perfect for swimming at this time of year, cool enough to be a lovely contrast to the hot sun but not super cold!

Most beaches will have lifeguards of some kind, but be careful when swimming in the sea and pay attention to buoys and other markers which will indicate where boats are allowed to be. The water of the Bay of Naples is generally safe, but can be very deep in places so do not swim out further than you feel comfortable.

Fall in Naples

The fall season in Naples is peak season for visitors, with many people drawn to the cooler temperatures and perception that the summer crowds have left. September in particular is extremely busy thanks to perfect weather conditions that allow visitors to do a lot of sightseeing and relax on the beach!

High and low average temperatures

At the beginning of September the average daily high is around 82°F/28°C but by the start of October this has decreased to around 75°F/24°C. September sees pretty consistent weather but once we get into October the chance of rain, cloudy days and higher winds increases. The nighttime temperatures are also consistent through these two months at around 58°F/15°C. While you’ll want a jacket or cardigan at night, it still feels very pleasant in the evenings.

In November the fall season is in full swing. Much cooler temperatures during the day of 62-65°F/16-18°C and at night of around 50°F/10°C mean you’ll want heavier clothing and jackets.

While beaches stay open through September and most of October, by November the weather isn’t good enough anymore. Many hotels in Sorrento and along the Amalfi coast close up until the spring as a result.

How much does it rain in the fall?

In September and October it doesn’t rain much, but in November it rains a lot more. This is the wettest month in the year and the month with the greatest chance of at least a partly cloudy day. You’ll definitely want to carry an umbrella and rain jacket with you, and make sure your shoes are water resistant.

Winter in Naples

Winter in Naples is the quietest time in the city, with the exception of the influx of visitors for the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Yes, the weather is as cold as it gets here, the days can be quite cloudy and we see a fair amount of rain, but you can get into top sights without the crowds.

High and low average temperatures

Through December, January and February the average day time temperatures stay around 55-58°F/13-14°C so there isn’t a lot of variation. At night it averages around 45°F/7°C so this is the time of year to stay warm inside a cozy restaurant rather than sitting outside!

The days are mostly cloudy and overcast but sometimes the sun shines through and it can feel surprisingly mild. With Naples being in the south of Italy it never really gets properly cold, and you won’t need to bring super heavy clothing with you.

Read our dedicated guides to each month in Naples:

How much does it rain in the winter? Does it snow?

In December and January the chance of rain is lower, with only occasional rainy days likely. However, in February the likelihood of some rain gets higher. It is more unpredictable in February so make sure you check the weather forecast each day and carry a rain hat, umbrella or rain jacket with you just in case.

It is very rare for Naples to get any snow. The last time was in February 2018 and only 5cm was recorded so it would be very odd for you to have to deal with snow during your trip!

Deciding on the best time to visit Naples and Campania

If you have a clear idea of what you want to do when you visit Naples and Campania, the weather should help guide you to deciding the best time to visit.

I’d suggest visiting in early spring or mid fall if sightseeing is your priority. The weather in Naples is good enough to be outside all day but not hot and the crowds are manageable. If you want to be here completely off season, you’ll need to cope with the rain and cooler temperatures in November and early December.

If you want to relax while visiting, you should come in August, which happens to be our favorite time for vacation time! Yes, you can still take day trips if you want, but the combination of long sunny days and warm evenings make the days seem to stretch out forever. It is also a little quieter and cooler in August compared to July.
