Our top tips for what to wear and what to pack for visiting Naples and Campania
As someone who has made the absolute worst packing decisions in the past, I’m a huge advocate for putting a lot of thought into travel packing. From wearing flip flops to walk around Pompeii to struggling with a huge suitcase up and down steep staircases, I’ve learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t so let me share my years of experience with you.
The main thing to remember is that you need to be comfortable when you travel, so this is the primary thing to keep in mind when deciding what will be on your packing list.
To get specific, in this guide we’ll be covering:
- What you shouldn’t leave home without
- What to pack for a winter trip to Naples
- What to pack for a trip to Naples in spring
- Summer essentials for a trip to Naples and Campania
- Packing for a fall trip to Naples
- Suggestions for what to wear when dining in Naples

Travel essentials to pack for every trip
Firstly, there are some items that you should pack for every trip to Naples, and Italy generally, no matter what season you are traveling.
- A neck pillow. The technology has come a long way so there is a huge variety of styles that are far more comfortable than the classic u-shaped ones! I love this memory foam one that can be twisted into different shapes, and this one with neck support comes with great reviews.
- A water bottle. Tap water in Italian cities and countryside is completely safe to drink so save on buying bottled water (as well as helping reduce the amount of plastic being used) and bring one of these collapsible water bottles with you.
- A portable charger. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be using your phone a lot while you travel, and having no battery when you’re out and about is the most frustrating thing! I pretty much always have a portable charger in my bag to keep my phone working.
- Luggage scales. Knowing before I get to the airport that my luggage is within the airline weight limits makes the journey much less stressful, and these digital scales are so small you can easily fit them in your bag for the return trip as well!
- A travel adapter. While I used to have a collection of different adapters for different countries, now I just have one which is suitable for use all over the world.
- A first-aid kit. Having a first aid kit with all the simple essentials you need to treat a minor injury is a must, it’s very handy for when you need something quickly.
- Travel insurance. Not technically something to pack, but definitely a travel essential! Comprehensive travel insurance is absolutely a must, so make sure you arrange this before your trip starts.
- An eSIM. Again, this is not something to physically bring with you but an eSIM is extremely helpful to have set up on your phone before you travel.

Anti-theft items
As much as we’d rather not have to deal with this topic, pickpockets are unfortunately present in Naples (and other Italian cities), as they are in major cities all over the world.
While the problem in Naples is not as extensive as some influencers and travel accounts portray, the easiest way to avoid any issues is to be proactive and keep yourself from being a target.
Don’t walk around with open bags or your phone in your back pocket, pay attention to your surroundings and don’t keep significant amounts of cash with you. The use of credit and debit cards is far more extensive in Italy now so you shouldn’t need more than around 100€ cash at any one time.
These items are useful to add to your Naples and Italy packing list for an extra layer of theft protection:
- A money belt. Super slim and with multiple pockets for essential items, this money belt is a good option if you’re packing light.
- An anti-theft backpack. Looking for something more substantial? There are plenty of anti-theft backpacks like this one which have lots of space for your personal items while also providing extra protection.
- A cross body bag. This is my personal favorite bag style for when I’m out and about. I can hold the bag in front of me when on buses or trains and I find a crossbody bag more practical than money belts.

What to pack for a winter trip to Naples
While winter in Naples isn’t as cold as in other parts of Italy, you’ll still need clothing on your packing list that’s suitable for the cooler and wetter weather here.
What to wear in the winter in Naples
It’s definitely not shorts weather so you’ll want to wear jeans or other long pants, along with long sleeve t shirts or jumpers to be comfortable on cooler days. Women in Naples often wear a dress with tights or leggings during the winter, paired with either ankle boots or sneakers.
Whatever you’re wearing, you’ll want a warm, waterproof jacket and scarf as your outer layers. The average temperatures in southern Italy do not dip as low as they do further north, but the wind off the sea can feel cold so do not underestimate how many warm layers you’ll need.
In the winter the sun will shine often, but it’s still on the colder side meaning jackets and coats are needed most days as you can see here.

Winter packing essentials
Here are some of my winter packing essentials for Naples:
- An umbrella. You should definitely include a good travel umbrella in your packing. Naples in winter sees a lot of rain showers which never last too long but will soak you if you are caught outside!
- A waterproof jacket. Having a good quality jacket that is both warm and waterproof is a good choice for winter trips. There are lots of options for both men and women to choose from out there!
- A warm scarf. I have a large number of scarves but when traveling I only bring one or two with me, one in neutral colors and the other a brighter/more colorful one for variety. I prefer larger ones like this when traveling in winter as they double up as a wrap when needed.
- Good quality shoes. This sounds like an obvious one but it really is so important to wear the right shoes! You want to bring shoes that are waterproof and that will support you when walking around all day. Some people wear sneakers but I prefer boots or a pair of more supportive walking shoes.
- Warm socks. Together with comfortable walking shoes, good socks are necessary – there’s no point in getting the right shoes and then wearing poor quality socks.

What to pack for a trip to Naples in spring
The shift from winter to spring happens quickly in Naples, one week you’re wearing a warm jacket and scarf and then the next you’re thinking about lighter t-shirts and sitting outside in the sunshine!
What to wear in the spring in Naples
Deciding what to add to your spring packing list very much depends on whether you’re coming to Naples in earlier in March and April or later in May and into June.
In early March the weather is still on the cooler side so you’ll want long pants and skirts/dresses, along with warmer tops and definitely a light jacket. However by the end of May the warmer weather is here to stay, so you’ll see plenty of people wearing shorts, short sleeved tops and lighter clothing in general.
Layers will be your friend in spring, so you can add or take off clothes as needed. I like to layer a light dress with leggings, a cardigan and then a jacket on top – this also keeps it easy to be respectful when entering churches as I can guarantee I will have covered shoulders and knees.
Shorts are common in late spring with tourists and even some Neapolitans so you will not look out of place if you choose to wear them, but be aware of the dress codes for places you want to visit and come prepared to cover up with a light wrap or longer length pants.
This photo was taken in March and you can see that I’m wearing a denim jacket with a scarf over a thick dress and leggings. This was just about enough to stay warm when not walking around!
Spring packing essentials
Here are some of my spring packing essentials for Naples:
- A travel umbrella. A good travel umbrella is still essential in spring, especially in March, to keep you dry in case of unexpected rain showers.
- A light rain jacket. Having a light jacket that is both waterproof and can be easily rolled up into a backpack is very handy in the spring!
- Good quality t-shirts. Basic tops in neutral colors can be layered or worn on their own, helping to keep your packing light and you feel comfortable.
- Light pants. I prefer to wear longer leg pants or leggings in spring as for me, it never gets quite warm enough for shorter clothes. Cotton capri pants like these are the perfect compromise and are extremely comfy.
- Comfortable shoes. You’ll want something a little lighter for the spring but still with a good sole and grip underfoot, and I find lightweight sneakers work really well!

Summer essentials for a trip to Naples and Campania
Summer in Naples and further south in Campania is hot, there is no escaping this, so your summer trip packing should all be about staying cool.
What to wear in the summer in Naples
With the temperatures soaring in the summer heat, you will want to think about not only the type of clothing you wear, but also the material those clothes are made from.
The difference in personal comfort wearing linen or cotton versus polyester and other non-natural fabrics is huge. When I first moved to Italy I didn’t understand why I was feeling so hot in the summer months until I realised that a lot of my wardrobe from the UK was just not made of the right materials! I paid close attention to what locals wear in Italy and adapted accordingly, which had a huge impact.
Follow Italian style and you won’t go wrong. This means linen shirts, loose maxi dresses, light cotton pants, smart linen shorts for men and all in light colors. You can absolutely wear shorts if you prefer.
If you’re heading out to the beaches at Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast remember that many of these towns don’t like tourists walking around in just their bathing suits so please bring clothes to wear on top when you’re on the train/buses and going into shops, bars or restaurants.
Hats are an absolute must-have when visiting sites like Pompeii during the hot summer months
Summer packing essentials
Here are some of my summer packing essentials for Naples:
- Walking sandals. Comfort is key when it comes to summer shoes, so go for a pair of walking sandals that support your feet. Avoid flip flops unless you’re lounging by a swimming pool or at the beach, they just don’t hold up well to the uneven cobblestone streets of Naples.
- A sun hat. Stylish but also practical, bring a sun hat that includes UV protection – you’ll thank me when you’re walking around during the hottest hours of the day sightseeing! Make sure to get one that folds down so it’s easy to pack.
- Sunscreen. While you can absolutely purchase top quality sunscreen here in Italy, it’s a good idea to come prepared with some already and then stock up as needed.
- Cooling towel. These cooling towels are a recent discovery and a great way to keep cool. You simply wet it with water and it stays cold for hours, very useful if you’re out sightseeing during the hot summers.
- A fan. I have a beautiful handmade Spanish fan I got on a trip a couple of years ago which I love, but sometimes a little powered fan is the answer to the intense heat!
Beach wear
Planning to include some beach days in your trip? Here are some packing suggestions to go with your bathing suits:
- A beach cover up. As noted above it is inappropriate to walk around in your bathing suit so a light beach cover up is both practical and respectful.
- A beach bag. Make it easy to get up and go to the beach with a dedicated bag that can hold all your essentials comfortably.
- Lightweight towel. Having one of these light, quick dry towels has been a revelation. Ideal for squeezing into a small corner of your bag, they are great for when you don’t want to carry heavy traditional towels around.
- Beach shoes. A lot of the beaches in Campania, especially on the Amalfi Coast are pebble beaches which can be painful to navigate in bare feet. These beach shoes are easy to slip on when needed and allow you to enjoy your beach day fully!

Packing for a fall trip to Naples
As with the spring months, there is a lot of difference between what to pack for a trip in early fall and late fall due to the big change in weather.
What to wear in the fall in Naples
In September the weather is still very warm and people are still going to the beach, so you’ll want to continue wearing your summer essentials of loose, linen clothing. Shorts are still popular and you won’t need anything beyond a light jacket for the evenings.
However, as the year progresses the temperatures start to cool and you’ll definitely want to switch to long pants/dresses and heavier layers. Bring a variety of long-sleeve and short-sleeve tops along with a few light cardigans or pullovers to mix and match according to the weather, and a heavier jacket and scarf for the evenings.
November is the wettest month of the year so you should definitely wear a waterproof coat and have an umbrella in your day bag, but it isn’t too cold so don’t overdo it with the layers!
Where fall weather can be changeable you’ll see a mix of clothing but as a rule of thumb you should consider bringing a heavier jacket for the fresher evenings and odd autumn storm
Fall packing essentials
Here are some of my fall packing essentials for Naples:
- Good walking shoes. I prefer closed toe shoes in the fall but nothing too heavy, so lightweight walking shoes like these are perfect.
- A scarf. Scarves are a great help in fall when the weather is very changeable, and can easily be put away in a backpack when out and about during the day.
- A travel umbrella. That travel umbrella is also needed in the fall, particularly later in October and November when it gets wetter in Naples.
- A good jacket. My go-to jacket for early fall especially is a denim jacket, but if you’ve bought a lovely leather jacket on your Italian travels, this works well too!
- Clothes that layer well. Think a dress that can be worn with leggings and a cardigan or by itself, or cotton pants that work with a light t-shirt or heavier jumper.

What to wear when dining in Naples
Unlike in northern Italy, Naples is not a particularly formal city. When thinking about what to wear in Italy, people often think they need to dress up for dinners and events but this really is not the case.
The vast majority of restaurants in Naples have no dress codes, so you will be fine wearing whatever makes you comfortable. High heels are not expected for women and men do not have to wear shirts and ties.
The exceptions to this are if you are planning to dine at a higher-end restaurant or are staying at a luxury hotel on Capri or around the Amalfi Coast – these establishments do come with higher expectations.
I tend to bring a few nicer outfits set aside for evenings in case we go somewhere a little nicer or I just want to dress up a little, but you do not need to have a whole separate section of formal clothing on your Italy packing list!
Generally smart casual/business casual is the go-to for nicer restaurants, but as long as you are respectful of other diners there is no dress code

What NOT to pack when you visit Italy and Naples
There are two types of items that I would recommend not bringing with you to Naples (and Italy in general).
1. Hair tools
Firstly, hairdryers, straighteners and curlers. American-voltage hair appliances just do not work here in Italy, or really anywhere in Europe. Yes, you can buy voltage converters but having tried many different types, these do not work consistently and are liable to short-circuit the electricity in your hotel room or apartment.
Hairdryers are provided as standard these days but the quality of these can vary considerably so instead I pack a dual voltage travel hairdryer which is also lighter and smaller than a regular one.
You can also purchase dual voltage straighteners and curling irons, or if you’re coming to Europe regularly, buy them here to be sure they will work without issues.
2. Large suitcases
The other thing I recommend people not bring to Italy is large suitcases.
I am not a light packer and will almost always go for checked luggage when traveling, but my one rule is that I can lift and carry my bags by myself.
You’ll need to get your luggage across airports, train stations, on and off trains and to your accommodation, and the chances are high that at some point you’ll encounter stairs, narrow streets and uneven surfaces. Navigating all this while dealing with a huge suitcase is extremely difficult, so I recommend going with either a large backpack (if you’ll be moving around a lot) or my preferred combination of a smaller suitcase and medium backpack.
